[JODI SULPIZIO] Have you noticed stormwater during and after rainstorms in your yard or along streets?
Impervious surfaces such as roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and rooftops direct stormwater quickly off-site into storm drains towards a water body.
Installing a rain garden can help manage stormwater, and reduce its impact.
This rain garden at a community park is an example of innovative green infrastructure that captures and slows the flow of stormwater.
Stormwater is captured and absorbed back into the ground.
Rain gardens are shallow depressions three to eight inches deep, depending on soil type and preferably planted with native species.
They are designed to receive stormwater from impervious surfaces such as roofs, sidewalks, and driveways on the property.
The bottom is flat and may be lined with a rock or sand layer to improve drainage.
The topsoil layer supports native plants and shrubs.
The plants capture, filter, and absorb excess water, helping reduce stormwater runoff.
Plant root systems also anchor the soil, reducing erosion.
Native plants support local biodiversity by providing important food and habitat for wildlife, especially insects and birds.
Rain garden size depends upon the estimated volume of water to be captured.
For example, the garden surface area should equal approximately 20% of the area draining into the garden.
Ideally, a rain garden should drain within 12 to 24 hours.
It should not hold water more than 48 hours.
This will prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the garden.
Rain gardens are useful in commercial settings and public areas as well as in home landscapes.
Remember the many benefits of rain gardens: capture stormwater, absorb nutrients and pollutants, recharge groundwater, and create native habitat for wildlife.
Plus, rain gardens add beauty to your landscape.
Consider building one on your property, or in your community today.
