Methane migration into water resources has been an environmental concern in areas of extensive shale gas development. Determining the sources of methane requires much study of each case. A new paper published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences titled, “Detecting and explaining why aquifers occasionally become degraded near hydraulically fractured shale gas wells” was released, identifying a new tool to help source methane.
