4 Servings. Serving Size: 1/4 of recipe

When preparing this recipe, start with clean countertops and utensils. Wash hands with soap and water. Wash whole, fresh onion, bell pepper, and garlic by gently rubbing under cold running water. Prewashed, packaged items do not require further washing.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon canola oil
  • 1⁄2 onion, diced
  • 1⁄2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (or 1⁄8 teaspoon garlic powder)
  • 1 1⁄2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1⁄8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey breast
  • 2 cups no salt added tomato sauce
  • 1⁄3 cup no salt added tomato paste

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large pot or sauce pan over medium heat.
  2. Sauté the onion, bell pepper, and garlic until tender and onion is translucent. Add spices and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Add ground turkey. Rewash hands after handling raw turkey. Cook, breaking up the turkey with a spoon, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F on a food thermometer, about 5–7 minutes. Drain off any fat.
  4. Add tomato sauce and tomato paste. Simmer, covered for 20–30 minutes until flavors are blended, and chili is thick.
