- [Presenter] The Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) Trainer and Lead Trainer application processes have been designed to develop trainers to effectively and consistently deliver the PSA Grower Training Course.

The following clip was developed to help lead trainer applicants understand the PSA Lead Trainer Review Process that determines if they meet the basic qualifications for becoming a lead trainer.

There are two levels of trainers, PSA Trainer and PSA Lead Trainer, Trainer and Lead Trainer, from now on.

Each one can perform different course management and teaching activities.

Attending the full two-day Produce Safety Alliance Train the Trainer Course is the first step to become a Trainer or a Lead Trainer.

PSA Trainer Application.

All Trainers will be required to fill out the Trainer Application prior to attending a Produce Safety Alliance Train the Trainer Course.

Trainer status will be granted after the course is completed and participant information is entered into a database.

All Trainers will receive a certificate generated by the Association of Food and Drug Officials, AFDO.

PSA Trainers can deliver any of the seven curriculum modules during a PSA Grower Training Course under the supervision of a Lead Trainer, register Grower Training Courses with AFDO as long as the Lead Trainer will be physically present for the entire Grower Training Course, proceed with the Lead Trainer Supplemental Application to become a Lead Trainer.

PSA Lead Trainer Supplemental Application.

After attending the Train the Trainer Course, participants will receive a unique link to the Lead Trainer's Supplemental Application.

Those interested in becoming Lead Trainers, need to complete the Supplemental Application form and pay the application fee, $325 for non-profit organizations and $500 for for-profit organizations.

Lead Trainer Applications will be evaluated using a standardized rubric that includes reviewing the initial Trainer Application and the Supplemental Application.

Each evaluation is completed by at least two reviewers.

The review process for becoming a Lead Trainer is intended to ensure that Lead Trainers meet the minimum qualifications in each of the four competency areas necessary to lead a Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training Course.

The application includes four short answer questions, one from each of the following four competency areas.

Produce safety scientific knowledge and experience.

Fruit and vegetable production knowledge.

Effective training delivery.

Knowledge of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule.

The responses will be evaluated using a rubric based on the following scale.

Below expectations, the applicant explains concepts incorrectly.

If any of the four responses are scored below expectations, the applicant will not qualify to become a lead instructor, but may take remediation steps and reapply.

Needs further evaluation.

The applicant seems to understand basic principles, but cannot explain or apply the information.

If any of the four responses are scored in this category, a follow-up phone interview may be scheduled to clarify the responses and ask additional questions.

Meets expectations.

The applicant demonstrates the ability to present and explain the content.

This may include breaking information down into parts, relating the parts to the overall picture, and making judgments based on standards.

When the applicant scores in this category, Lead Trainer status will be granted.

PSA Lead Trainers can deliver any of the seven curriculum modules during a Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training, register Grower Training Courses with AFDO, conduct a training solo or by forming training teams, as long as all trainers have attended the Train the Trainer Course, for example, PSA Trainers.
