4 Servings | Serving size: ¼ of recipe, about 6 slices

When preparing this recipe, start with clean countertops and utensils. Wash hands with soap and water.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 Tablespoons less sodium soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1½ teaspoons liquid smoke
  • 1½ teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1½ Tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 (8 ounce) package tempeh

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, prepare the marinade. Whisk together olive oil, soy sauce, maple syrup, liquid smoke, apple cider vinegar, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and onion powder until well combined. Pour the marinade into an 8-by-8-inch shallow baking dish.
  2. Cut tempeh into ¼-inch slices, about 24. Place the slices into the marinade in a single layer and turn to coat both sides. For a stronger flavor, marinate the tempeh in the refrigerator for 15–20 minutes, turning halfway through.
  3. While the tempeh is marinating, preheat oven to 400°F (204°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  4. Spread the marinated tempeh slices in a single, even layer on the baking sheet. Discard any remaining marinade. Bake for 8–10 minutes until lightly browned and slightly crispy. Turn slices carefully using a fork and continue baking for 8–10 minutes until desired browning and crispness are reached. Remove from oven and cool for a few minutes before serving.
  5. Store Smoky Baked Tempeh Strips in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4–7 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven until crispy and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
