Sheet Mulching: Lawn to Garden Bed in 3 Steps
Length: 00:05:40 | Constance Schmotzer, Kathy Yost, Sandy Ullrich, Monica Thomas, David Moyar
This how-to video demonstrates how you can use "sheet mulching" to easily transform lawn into a new garden bed. You will use readily available, sustainable materials and zero chemicals. You simply smother lawn and other undesirable plants by layering sheets of cardboard with a mulch material! Then you let your new garden bed rest for a few months before you plant into it. Over the winter is perfect. The vegetation under the cardboard will be smothered and the mulch will begin to break down, building organic matter and improving soil quality.
You can use this method to create any type of garden - vegetable, perennial, even connecting areas between trees. Just vary the depth of the mulch. Increase mulch depth in beds for plants that require greater fertility, such as vegetables and annuals. Decrease for plants that need poor soil, like native perennials.
