Safe Operation of Forklifts and Pallet Fork Attachments
Pre-Operation Inspection
Operators should conduct a pre-operation inspection before each use to identify potential mechanical failures or safety hazards. A typical inspection takes 5–10 minutes.
Items to check include:
- Tire condition: no major cracks, cuts, or low pressure
- Hydraulic hoses and fittings: no visible leaks, wet spots, or damage
- Forks: straight, no cracks, and tips are even (Figure 1)
- Mast and lift chains: properly lubricated, not visibly loose, damaged, or rusted (Figure 2)
- Safety features: seat belts, horns, lights, and alarms are functioning
- Fluid levels: engine oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluid at recommended levels
- Brakes and steering: responsive with no unusual noise or delay
If any problems are discovered, the forklift should not be operated until repairs are completed.


Machine Blindspots
Forklift blind spots are one of the most common causes of workplace collisions because the operator's view is often partially or fully blocked by the machine itself or the load being carried (Figure 3). When visibility is reduced, even experienced operators can miss pedestrians as well as objects and equipment. This risk increases in tight warehouse aisles, at intersections, and whenever loads are raised or oversized.
Key Blind Spot Visibility Hazards
- Front visibility can be completely blocked by large or elevated loads
- Rear blind spots exist due to counterweights and limited operator view
- Side blind zones increase when turning in narrow aisles or near racking
- Pedestrians can easily disappear in intersections or congested work areas

Safety Practices to Improve Visibility
- Drive in reverse when the load blocks forward vision
- Slow down at intersections and blind corners
- Use horn signals to alert nearby workers of forklift movement
- Install and use mirrors, cameras, or proximity warning systems when available
- Keep travel paths clearly marked and free of clutter
- Use a trained spotter when visibility is severely limited
Load Capacity
Every forklift has a maximum rated load capacity, which is listed on the machine's data plate (Figure 4). This rating indicates the maximum weight the forklift can safely lift under specific conditions.

Operators should:
- Never exceed the rated capacity
- Understand that attachments can reduce lifting capacity
- Recognize that raising loads decreases stability
- Ensure loads are evenly balanced across both forks (Figure 5)

Overloading a forklift or carrying improperly balanced loads can cause the machine to tip forward or become unstable.
Center of Gravity and Stability
Forklift stability depends on maintaining the combined center of gravity of the forklift and its load within the machine’s stability triangle.
The stability triangle is formed by (Figure 6):
- The two front wheels
- The pivot point of the rear axle

If the combined center of gravity moves outside this triangle, the forklift can tip forward or sideways.
To maintain stability and reduce the risk of tip-over, operators should:
- Stay within the rated load capacity
- Keep loads low to the ground while traveling
- Avoid sudden turns, stops, or rapid movements
- Travel slowly on uneven surfaces or slopes
- Ensure loads are balanced and properly secured
Using Pallet Fork Attachments on Other Machines
Pallet forks are commonly attached to skid steers, tractors, and other equipment. While these machines can perform similar tasks as forklifts, they often have different stability characteristics and lifting limitations.
Operators should keep the following in mind:
- Know the Machine's Limits
- Attaching pallet forks can change how the machine handles and may reduce lifting capacity. Always consult manufacturer specifications and stay within rated limits.
- Maintaining Proper Load Position
- Loads should be centered on the forks and kept as close to the machine as possible. Carrying loads too far forward increases the risk of tipping.
- Travel with Loads Low
- Keep loads low to the ground during transport to maintain stability and improve visibility.
- Use Extra Caution on Slopes
- Machines with pallet forks can become unstable on uneven terrain. Avoid steep slopes and operate slowly over rough ground.
- Ensure Attachments Are Secure
- Confirm that pallet fork attachments are properly mounted and locked in place before use. Loose attachments can shift or detach during operation.
Operator Training
Proper training is essential for safe forklift operation. Training can be obtained through employers, equipment dealers, or certified safety trainers.
Training programs should include:
- Forklift components and controls
- Load capacity and equipment limitations
- Safe driving and load-handling practices
- Hazard recognition and safe work procedures
- Hands-on operating experience
If experienced workers are training others, they should emphasize safe habits and avoid passing on unsafe shortcuts, such as:
- Driving too fast or making sharp turns
- Carrying loads too high
- Skipping pre-operation inspections
- Overloading equipment
- Operating improperly on slopes
Refresher training should be provided when new equipment is introduced or when unsafe operating practices are observed.
Equipment Maintenance
Following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule can help extend the life of the equipment in addition to improving safety.
Proper maintenance activities include:
- Lubricating lift chains, rollers, and pivot points
- Inspecting hydraulic systems for leaks or damage
- Checking forks for cracks or bendingÂ
- Monitoring tire wear and condition
- Replacing worn parts according to manufacturer recommendations
