Rain Barrel Accessory Kits Available Now
The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program now offers rain barrel kits for purchase at select county extension offices around the state. Kits are available for purchase during registration for extension rain barrel workshops/webinars. These kits can be paired with an HDPE plastic barrel to create a fully functional rain barrel ready for installation.
Rain barrels are a relatively inexpensive and easy best management practice that can help reduce the negative effects of excess stormwater. Some of these detrimental effects to local waterways include flooding, pollution, sedimentation, streambank erosion, and threats to human/aquatic health. These impacts are becoming more common as we increase development and, in turn, stormwater. Rain barrels capture precipitation before it becomes stormwater and store it for later use.
More information about the uses and benefits of rain barrels can be found in Rain Barrels Information and Guide.
These rain barrel kits simplify creating a rain barrel by providing all the necessary fittings and connectors, except for a few common tools and equipment most already have on hand. Kits can be purchased online from select Master Watershed Steward Programs and picked up at local county offices across the state. The following programs/counties will offer rain barrel kit pickups at their extension office:
- Adams
- Allegheny
- Berks
- Bucks
- Chester and Delaware
- Elk
- Franklin
- Lancaster
