Dr. Sharnine Herbert is a native of Jamaica, New York. Growing up in Queens, she attended public schools, where she was deeply influenced by a diverse group of teachers who took a personal interest in her academic journey. She went on to earn degrees from Morgan State University and the University of South Carolina before obtaining her doctorate from Howard University. While her achievements are notable, she affectionately refers to herself as “The Girl from Queens.” A dedicated servant-leader, she is committed to service and advocates passionately for student success.

Sharnine has held leadership positions in both the community and academia. She has served on the executive boards of the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County, the National Communication Association (NCA) Black Caucus, NCA’s Legislative Assembly, the Eastern Communication Association (ECA), and the National Black Graduate Student Association (NBGSA).

Her commitment to service and student advocacy is evident in her role as chair of the Helping Our People Excel (H.O.P.E.) Diversity Scholarship and as the campus Director of the Frederick Douglass Institute at Shippensburg University. Her career seamlessly blends teaching, service, and student advocacy.

Recently, she concluded a 15-year tenure with the Girl Scouts of America, having served as both a former Brownie and a 13-year troop leader. She also completed her involvement with Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Western Maryland Chapter, where she was the chartering Vice President and held various leadership roles over the past decade. This African American organization provides leadership experiences for children aged 2-19. In the spring of 2024, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an organization dedicated to sisterhood, scholarship, and service since its founding in 1913.

Now an empty nester, as her only daughter, Senaiah, attends college out of state, Sharnine is embracing the opportunity to refocus on her professional and personal pursuits. She remains dedicated to community service and continues to live by her life’s motto: Aspire to Inspire as she embarks on this new chapter.
