NBS Spreadsheet Version 4.0 Released

NBS Spreadsheet Version 4.0 - October 2017 has been released by the Act 38 Pennsylvania Nutrient Management Program. Version 4.0 includes several significant updates which are reflected in a version change from 3.0 to 4.0.

The previous version of the NBS Standard Format planning tool was Version 3.2 which was released in October 2015.  The release of NBS Spreadsheet Version 4.0 - October 2017 renders Versions 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 obsolete for Act 38 nutrient management planning.  All nutrient balance sheets written for Crop Year 2019 must use NBS Spreadsheet Version 4.0 - October 2017.

The major changes to NBS spreadsheet has been a change in the change in the overall planning approach used.  The NBS planning tool now starts with Crop Groups rather than CMU/Fields in the planning process.  The planning tool has been revised so that each planning scenario is built around crop groups.

Each of the manure plan basis options were revised to address winter applications of exported manure on importing operations.  Option 1-P Removal and Option 2-N Requirement may no longer be used for winter applied manure.   All winter manure applications must now use Option 3-P Index.   In addition, Option 3-P Index also requires the Winter Manure Application Matrix evaluation for the fields being planned for winter manure applications.

The NBS Excel planning tool has undergone a major reworking so that it is now very similar to NMP Excel planning tool.  A data entry page is now used to enter planning information for each crop group scenario.  This especially makes planning the following significantly easier and more efficient:

  • Double crops
  • Multiple applications
  • Winter applications
  • Legume recommendations

Information to complete a NBS is entered into the following five input sections:

NBS Cover Page

This is the same as in the previous version.

Manure Group Input

The manure group names and analysis information for sixteen manure groups can be entered here.

Create Farm Crop List

Crops that are specific to the farm can be selected.  Crops can be added or deleted at any time by selecting or de-selecting the check box next to the crop on the list.  The list includes all the crops included in the Penn State AASL Soil Test Recommendations for Agronomic Crops.

NBS Input Page

Field specific criteria for a crop group is entered in this section including the P Index, Winter Matrix, and Field Notes.

NBS Summary

There are two new data information cells in the NMP Summary.  The Importing Farm Name and a Whole Farm Note can be entered here.  The NBS Summary includes the same information with the addition of supplemental fertilizer columns.

Residual N Calculator

This calculator will determine manure nitrogen residual based on the approach and values provided in the Penn State Agronomy Guide Table 1.2-15.  The calculated value can then be selected in the NBS Input sheet in place of the existing manure nitrogen histories of rarely, frequently, continuously, etc.

A completed NBS will include the following sections:

NBS Cover Page

This is the same as in the previous version.

NBS Summary

It is essentially the same as before with two new data information cells here.  New additions are the Importing Farm Name and a Whole Farm Note cells, along with the addition of Supplemental Fertilizer columns.  This information is transferred from the NBS Input sections.

NBS Summary Notes

This is essentially the same as before.  This information is transferred from the NBS Input Section.  The Planned Rate notes and Nutrient Balance notes are based on the manure plan option selected and if soil test values were used in the NBS Input Section.  The Importing Farm Name and the Crop Group Field ID note can be added by the planner in the NBS Summary and Input Sections.

Manure Group Information Printout

This includes the Manure Group name and analysis information.  New fields include the Analysis Report Date, Laboratory Name, Organic N, Ammonium N, Percent Solids, and PSC Value.  This additional information is needed to incorporate the use of Agronomy Guide Table 1.2-15 and using the N Fractions method.  The information is transferred from the Manure Group Input worksheet.

Crop & Manure Management Printout

This page was based on the NMP Version 5 Crop & Manure Management page.  It will show the information including double crops and multiple manure applications in the same way.  This sheet replaces the NBS that was completed and printed in NBS Version 3.2.  Values on this page are transferred based on information entered in the Manure Group Information sheet and NBS Input Sheet.

P Index Printout

The P index looks like the Act 38 NMP P Index.  P Index fields with multiple manure applications or double cropped fields will be displayed here.  The PA P Index Multiple Application sheet has been eliminated.  All P Index information is entered in the NBS Input Section and transferred to this page.  This page also replaces the P Index Cover Page.  If there are no P Index fields, then the only the first page will print with a message “There are No P Index Part B Fields in this Plan”.  This page is set to print by default automatically.

Winter Application Matrix Printout (Optional sheet)

The winter matrix information is entered in the NBS Input sheet.  A field receiving winter manure application will automatically be added to the P Index.  The distance from water bodies and drainage class is entered under the P Index input criteria in the NBS Input section.

Crop List Options (Optional sheet)

This sheet lists the crops available for planning purposes.  Crops not on the list can be added by a planner.

Manure Nitrogen Residual Calculator (Optional sheet)

This section is used if a planner has created a farm specific manure nitrogen history.

The current version and release date of the NBS Standard Format Spreadsheet is “NBS Version 4.0 – October 2017”.  It is available for use with Excel Versions 2007-2016.
