Soil, Hydrology and Liquid Manure Workshop

This basic workshop for commercial and public nutrient management specialists provides an introduction to soil properties, soil quality and soil hydrology with a specific focus on how they affect liquid manure application with irrigation and injection equipment.

Workshop Topics

The classroom session in the morning will address the following topics:

  • Basic Soil Properties - Texture, Structure, Depth, Drainage, Compaction and Infiltration
  • Hydrology - Hydrologic Cycle, Aquifer Recharge, Karst Geology and Variable Flow Runoff
  • Irrigation - Hydraulic Loading, Application Rate vs. Infiltration Rate, and Application Depth vs. Available Water Capacity

The in-field session in the afternoon, based on the operation, will demonstrate:

  • Irrigation options and equipment such as Drag Hose, Center Pivot, Traveling Gun, Pulse Jet, Stationary Gun, Tank Spreaders
  • Incorporation of Manure
  • Cleanout of Lines


Registration is required for all Pennsylvania Nutrient Management Specialist Certification trainings. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Registration closes one week prior to the training date.

All registrations must be made through the PAPlants. Guidelines for using PAPlants are outlined in the PAPlants User Guide.
