Once a vacant lot, the Donora Second Street Garden is now a thriving hub for environmental education, sustainable food production, and community pride. Its demonstration gardens—featuring raised beds and pollinator plantings that promote hands-on learning and self-sufficiency—are maintained by the Penn State Master Gardeners of Washington County.
Native plants and trees support local ecosystems, while pollinator beds attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. A three-bin compost system and on-site rainwater collection model sustainable practices like recycling organic waste and conserving water. Perennial crops—such as asparagus, strawberries, and serviceberries—offer seasonal harvests and teach long-term food production.
Through open houses, volunteer days, and informal gatherings, the garden fosters food security, environmental stewardship, and community connection. It serves as a living classroom—and a powerful example of how even a small space can make a lasting impact.
