The Penn State Master Gardener volunteer program supports the outreach mission of Penn State Extension by sharing unbiased research-based information to educate the public and our communities. We focus on sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship.
We train people with an interest and enthusiasm for horticulture, giving them basic training in a broad range of horticultural topics. In return, participants dedicate volunteer time teaching community residents.
The statewide program requires that you apply in the county in which you live. Our next class will begin Fall of 2027 if you are interested in receiving information for future classes send your email and mailing address to:

The training consists of about 15 three-hour classes scheduled from October through March. There is a mid-term and final exam, and each Master Gardener trainee participates in a class project.
New Master Gardeners give 50 volunteer hours their first year and 20 in subsequent years, along with 10 hours of continuing education. The $250 fee covers the cost of the manual and classes. More details can be found on the statewide Master Gardener website.
