Approximately 220 Master Gardener volunteers participate in garden-related educational activities throughout Allegheny County.

Master Gardeners attend a 20-session training program and are required to complete 50 hours in community-based gardening, beautification, and education efforts to complete their certification. They may begin their volunteer commitment while they complete the coursework and are expected to achieve the 50-hour volunteer commitment by the end of their first year in the program (end of September). In following years, the requirements include 10 hours of continuing education and 20 hours of volunteer service. Volunteer opportunities include the following:

Speakers Bureau

The Speakers Bureau is comprised of Master Gardeners who have created well-researched presentations that are available to your organization or garden club. They are 45 to 60 minutes long and cover a wide range of topics.

Garden in the Parks

Garden in the Park, held at both North and South Park, is an opportunity to meet with the Master Gardeners who work all around the county and especially in our demonstration gardens. We have fun activities, information booths, guest tables for related organizations, and more.
