Pennsylvania youth ages 5 to 18 are invited to participate in a free trial of the Pennsylvania 4-H program, offered by Penn State Extension, from August 1 to September 30.

The free trial allows youth and their families to explore 4-H programs and activities before the start of the new program year in October. Organizers said the opportunity is designed to help families determine whether 4-H is a good fit before enrolling.

Enrollment fees are waived during the trial period; however, club or event-specific fees may still apply. The two-month timeframe is intended to give participants time to experience the program before deciding about enrollment for the upcoming year.

Through hands-on learning experiences and mentorship from adult volunteers, 4-H members can develop skills in areas such as science, technology, engineering, and math; agriculture; sewing; woodworking; food production; animal care; community service; and other topics.

"4-H is a close-knit community of welcoming kids and caring adult volunteers," program leaders said. "We're on a mission to help young people reach their full potential through learning, leadership, service, and friendship."

Free trial offerings and activities may vary by county. Those interested in participating in the free trial period should contact their county’s 4-H educator. A full list of county educators is available on the Pennsylvania 4-H website.

Administered in Pennsylvania by Penn State Extension, 4-H is a nonformal educational youth-development program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that helps young people develop knowledge and skills to become capable, caring, and contributing citizens.
