Section 02: Understanding Penn State Extension And 4-H

For more than 100 years, Pennsylvanians have relied on Penn State Extension for up-to-date information and new ways to solve individual and community problems. Extension programs are funded cooperatively by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and state and county governments.

4-H is a youth education program of Penn State Extension. It is a non-formal education program for youth between the ages of 5 and 18. 4-H extends the knowledge base of the land-grant university system to youth to help them develop life skills in citizenship and leadership. Volunteer leaders are the valued teachers!

Pennsylvania 4-H Mission

4-H Youth Development represented by Head, Heart, Hands, and Health is a community of young people across Pennsylvania learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills to become productive members of society. Youth become knowledgeable, caring, competent, and contributing members of their communities. As the youth development program of Penn State Extension, 4-H empowers youth to strive for excellence.

Pennsylvania 4-H Vision

4-H Youth Development: providing quality leadership, citizenship, and life skills for today’s youth.

4-H is a family-oriented, non-formal education program based in communities in all 67 counties throughout Pennsylvania. The program is conducted by volunteers and is supervised by professional youth educators. Members participate in 4-H in a variety of ways. They may be involved in a 4-H project in their school, enroll in a short-term program to learn a specific set of project skills, or be a member of a 4-H club that meets on a regular basis.
