Safety Day

For over twenty years, Potter County 4-H has hosted the annual Progressive Ag Safety Day program for all fourth-grade students in Potter County. Each May, fourth-grade classes gather at the Potter County Fairgrounds for a day of safety workshops and demonstrations taught by community businesses, organizations, and 4-H and FFA members. We offer safety topics on animals, camping, water, tractors, lawnmowing, electrical, ATVs, sun and more. Each year is a different series depending on the needs of the students.

Summer Camps

Summer is not complete without 4-H Camp! 4-H Camp Harmony is an overnight experience for youth from Potter, McKean, Cameron, Elk, Jefferson, Clearfield, Centre, Clinton, Huntingdon, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Bedford, and Somerset Counties. It is a three-night, four-day experience open to all youth ages 8 to 14. Our camp is staffed by Leaders-in-Training, adult volunteers and counselors, and 4-H Extension Educators. Our counselors are typically past campers who have taken on a leadership opportunity to mentor youth.

Discovery Day Camp is three days in July. The camp takes place at the Potter County Fairgrounds, and the topics vary depending on guest speaker availability and campers' interests. Both 4-H members and non-members ages 5-14 are eligible to attend. Youth aged 15-17 who are interested in Discovery Day Camp can serve as Leaders-in-Training for the event. Those aged 18 and over can serve as adult volunteers or counselors during the week.

Clinics and Workshops

Each summer, we offer our animal science members a series of hands-on animal clinics. Clinics vary each year based on members' needs and interests. Previous topics have included biosecurity, showmanship, fire safety, nutrition, and buyer etiquette.

Horse members can participate in riding clinics focusing on specific skills with one of Penn State's Equine Extension Associates. These members are also invited to participate in the annual District VIII Horse Retreat held at the McKean County fairgrounds, where members will continue to improve their horsemanship skills with others in the region.

Youth members are also invited to participate in our monthly Make and Take programs, where youth are introduced to various project areas available through the 4-H program. These programs are designed to have members leave with an item that can be exhibited at that year's county fair.

Potter County Fair

The annual county fair is something that members and families look forward to each year. During the week, 4-H clubs support each other through livestock shows, non-animal entry exhibitions, and milkshake sales while continuing to develop life skills and showcase individual talents.

The 4-H program also offers walk-up activities in the 4-H Exhibit Building at the Potter County Fairgrounds throughout the week. Members also sell milkshakes and floats on the Midway throughout the week as part of our annual fundraising efforts to support youth scholarships, day camps, and animal clinics.
