That’s Sew Great!

These days, many Home Economics courses have been cut from school curriculum. Children miss out on learning basic life skills. Many children do not know how to hem, replace a button or make a simple alteration. At the Masthope Mountain Community 4-H activity center, sewing is one of the projects that children may choose.

Leader Lisa is helping children to create a complete garment. There is so much involved! Fabric is chosen and pinned to a pattern. The pattern is cut precisely and the sewing begins! Imagine the sense of accomplishment, when a garment is ready to wear! Research has found that youth who sew develop skills needed to become more creative thinkers.

The 4-H sewing project offers beginner to advanced learning opportunities. The first piece may be pajamas, but later, the 4-H'er could be the belle of the ball! Advanced sewers will develop their unique style and learn about technology in sewing, and careers in the textile industry.

To learn more about the sewing project and other 4-H opportunities, contact Penn State Extension Pike County PA 4-H, 514 Broad St., Milford, PA, by phone at 570-296-3400, or by email.
