4-H History

Embryology Project

Embryology Project

In 1902, 4-H was created to introduce youth to basic farming. The "learn by doing" attitude was established in schools, and later in organized clubs outside of the classroom. The goal was and is simple: to help youth develop as individuals and responsible productive citizens.

For 100 years, 4-H has been reaching out to communities throughout the nation, and the world. Using a hands-on educational approach, 4-H is offered through the Penn State Cooperative Extension office here in Philadelphia. 4-H helps youth to reach their fullest potential, by helping them to develop life skills, have fun, meet new people, build self-confidence, learn responsibility, and set and achieve goals! 4-H fosters citizenship, leadership, and growth and development through a variety of projects. 4-H projects offer "hands on" learning.

Philadelphia 4-H staff offer a variety of programs that enrich the lives of community youth and assist 4-H members in acquiring life skills in five areas:

  • Personal development
  • Acquiring and analyzing information
  • Problem solving and decision-making
  • Managing resources
  • Communication, developing working relationships with other
