Luzerne County 4-H Achievement Recipients Announced

Luzerne County 4-H members and leaders were recently recognized for their achievements during the 2015-2016 program year. Receiving recognition were members who participated in county, district and state 4-H events as well as all 4-H leaders for their year of service.

Luzerne County 4-H Members Participate in State 4-H Horse Show

Twenty-five Luzerne County 4-H members recently participated in the 57th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show in Harrisburg. More than 700 youth from across the state participated in 73 performance classes throughout the weekend event. The state show is the final competition of the year for 4-H horse members enrolled in performance horse projects. To be eligible for the show, members must advance through qualifying competitions at county and district levels.

Makayla Guzzo, Dallas, received top honors at the recently held 4-H Junior Horse Championship Show in Centre Hall, PA.
Jodie Salansky, Dallas, and her spring calf, Demi, a Red and White Holstein, with her Master Showman Award received at the All-American Dairy Show.

Stop the Invasion: Unwanted Plants, Bugs and Other Pests

Penn State Extension and Pennsylvania 4-H, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, created Stop the Invasion: Unwanted Plants, Bugs and Other Pests, a hands-on curriculum to address the threat of invasive species.
Youth in the Science Track of the 2017 Wildlife and Forestry Field Day learned to apply wildlife and forestry knowledge in on-site skills sessions. A sign language interpreter (center) assisted in explaining tree measuring technique.
Members Learn, Explore and Compete at 4-H Wildlife and Forestry Field Day

The 2017 4-H Wildlife and Forestry Field Day, held at Rock Springs, PA, was another “wild” success! 4-H youth and adults from across the state explored the wildlife and forestry sciences. The event featured an Exploratory Track for younger 4-H youth and a Science Track for teens. The theme for the Exploratory Track presented tools and methods for wildlife and forestry research, while the Science Track focused on applying research knowledge to managing forests and wildlife.
