4-H Dairy Member Wins Major Award

An Indiana County 4-H member has received a major award from the Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders Association.

4-H Hippology Contest Held

Thirty 4-H members representing four Indiana County 4-H Horse Clubs recently participated in the annual 4-H Hippology Contest. Hippology means "the study of horses," and members' knowledge was tested on such topics as barn safety, trailer safety, farrier tools, harness parts, bones, and hoof anatomy. The contest also included a written test and slide identification.
NYSD is also held in conjunction with National 4-H Week!

Indiana County 4-H'ers Attend State Leadership Event

Ten Indiana County 4-H members recently attended the 2017 Pennsylvania State 4-H Teen Leadership Conference and Junior Teen Conference. Over 500 youth attended the conferences designed to teach leadership, communication, and recreation skills.

Eight Indiana County 4-H horse program members recently participated in 14 classes at the 56th Annual State 4-H Horse Show held in Harrisburg. Events at the show tested skills in showmanship, equitation, jumping, driving, and timed events. The show included nearly 700 exhibitors from over 60 counties.

Stop the Invasion: Unwanted Plants, Bugs and Other Pests

Penn State Extension and Pennsylvania 4-H, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, created Stop the Invasion: Unwanted Plants, Bugs and Other Pests, a hands-on curriculum to address the threat of invasive species.
Youth in the Science Track of the 2017 Wildlife and Forestry Field Day learned to apply wildlife and forestry knowledge in on-site skills sessions. A sign language interpreter (center) assisted in explaining tree measuring technique.
Members Learn, Explore and Compete at 4-H Wildlife and Forestry Field Day

The 2017 4-H Wildlife and Forestry Field Day, held at Rock Springs, PA, was another “wild” success! 4-H youth and adults from across the state explored the wildlife and forestry sciences. The event featured an Exploratory Track for younger 4-H youth and a Science Track for teens. The theme for the Exploratory Track presented tools and methods for wildlife and forestry research, while the Science Track focused on applying research knowledge to managing forests and wildlife.
