Meeting Minutes

The Cumberland Country 4-H Advisory Council met on Monday June 23, 2014 at the Penn State Extension Office, Carlisle, Pa.

COUNCIL ATTENDANCE: Deb Yorlets, Susan Ostrowski, Mike Cross, Duane Duncan, Dwight West, Anita Long, Linda Willis, Michael Martin, Rachel Brandt Shambaugh, Francesco Mazzotta, Kelsey Hurley, Glenda Farner Strasbaugh and Youth Representative Mackenzie Yorlets

Meeting Called to Order by President Deb Yorlets at 7:00 PM

2013 NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS PRESENTATION- A slide show by Nathan Repetz and Kayla Buker, was held in Atlanta, GA after Thanksgiving 2013 for 5 days. They toured Atlanta, took Irish dance classes, proper nutrition, Food Bank, and saw Martin Luther King’s home and grave.  They thoroughly enjoyed their time.

Treasurer’s Report-Review. Approved (Strasbaugh/Cross)

COMMITTEE REPORTS: Extension Board-Pam reported they listened to presentation given by Nathan and Kayla. Ben Jackson was awarded the Rosemarie Peiffer scholarship. Farm tours were discussed.

Youth Report-Mackenzie Yorlets reported on upcoming Day Camp with 29 campers, and workshops planned. The Farm Stock had a goat showing talk. Nathan spoke on State Days and Kayla spoke on upcoming competitions.

OLD BUSINESS: Volunteer Background Clearance should be completed immediately via email.

National 4-H Congress has no Cumberland applicants for 2014. Ideas were discussed to interest 4-H’ers ages 15-18.

NEW BUSINESS: Council nominations-Francesco Mazzotta -motion and vote to welcome him on council (Cross)

Awards Review Committee - Achievement Awards banquet Sat. Oct. 4, 2014 at Penn Township with a breakfast. Committee is Glenda Farner Strasbaugh, Francesco Mazzotta, Rachel Shambaugh, Mike Cross, Linda Willis, Alyssa Knisely

Williams Grove Food Stand update- volunteers are needed to help Buck Swisher Thurs. Aug. 21 for set up. Show runs Aug 24-Sept 1.

Car Show Food Stand Update- help is needed Sat, July 12, and Sun, 13 with many slots open. The Fishing Club will run all slots for Fri,July 11.

4-H Achievement Banquet update- banners contest by all 4-H clubs. A silent auction will take place for baskets donated by the 4-H clubs.

Donations update- a grand total of $5,275 from January to date, has been donated to Cumberland County 4-H by local clubs.

OTHER  BUSINESS:

PSU Affirmative Action- Pam said guidelines are being followed.

PROGRAM UPDATES: Livestock Benefit Auction held at Big Spring High School on May 9 was a success.

Exchange Week on June 13-20 with 8 youth and 3 chaperones from Colorado visiting was fun with hiking, the Capitol, Hershey, Gettysburg, picnic and tour of Garman’s Farm.

AG Science Day Camp this week June 24, 25 as reported above by Mackenzie Y.

Activity Day I & II is July 16 and August 1

State Achievement Days July 28-30 with 10 children signed up, so far.

4-H Project Round Up is July 31- August 3

Livestock Round Up & Sale is August 2-4
