Meeting Minutes

The Cumberland County 4-H Advisory Council met on Monday Apr. 28, 2014 at the Penn State Extension Office, Carlisle, Pa.

COUNCIL ATTENDANCE: Deb Yorlets, Susan Ostrowski, Mike Cross, Alyssa Knisely, Duane Duncan, Dwight West, Mary Ellen Kurnath, Carla Markle, Anita Long, Linda Willis and Youth Representative Mackenzie Yorlets


Meeting Called to Order by President Deb Yorlets at 7:00 PM

Secretary’s Minutes- Silent review. Approved (Cross/Markle)

Treasurer’s Report- Review. Approved (Knisely/Kurnath)

COMMITTEE REPORTS: Extension Board- Pam reported on Dairy Program presentation, and Master Gardeners (Penn State extension Board meeting)

Youth report-Mackenzie Yorlets reported on Farm Stock getting ready for the July fair.

OLD BUSINESS: Volunteer Background Clearance should be completed immediately via email.

Spring Sub sale results were profits of $1,593.50 towards the Development Fund.

NEW BUSINESS: Rosemarie Peiffer Award- applications due May 5 for this $1,000 college scholarship. Committee is: Mike Martin, Alyssa Knisely, Mike Cross.

National Congress applications due June 1 to committee of Mike Cross, Dwight West and Linda Willis.  Program is in Atlanta, GA in November.

Williams Grove Food Stand- Buck Swisher agreed to head this activity.

Car Show Food Stand- July 11, 12, 13 Chrysler Show, will be breakfast and lunch 4 AM to 2 PM. Clubs who work shifts will receive a % of profits. Fairgrounds give us 25% of their profits, and we will redistribute 50% of our profits to participating clubs. Voted and approved. (Willis/Duncan)

4-H Achievement Banquet- will be Sat. Oct 4, 8:30 AM at Penn Township Fire Hall. A club banner contest will be on the agenda with winning club receiving an ice cream party. An auction of donated baskets from clubs will also be on the agenda. The highest priced basket from a club will receive a pizza party. The baskets proceeds will be divided 50% towards Development Fund and 50% towards clubs. Voted and approved. (Cross/West)


Donation letter requests remain the same.

Fair Funds-State budget for country fairs. We received $3,452.00 from Pa Dept of Agriculture.

4-H cookbooks are still available for $10.00

4-H Summer Assistant- has been chosen among 6 applicants, 20 year old Kelsey Hurley (daughter of Sue) will start June 2.

A.B. Ross Program-annual field day April 17 at Shade Gap, Huntingdon County sponsored by Sen. Eichelberger. 14 kids ages 13-18 attended program about feed/dairy.

Livestock Hog Tag System-Kathy Walton is helping with sterile procedures as hogs are presently endangered with a contagious, communicable disease.


Winter Academy & Teen Retreat was Feb 28 to Mar 2. 18 members attended with a Winter Olympics Theme.

Speak Out Night was April 15 with 38 contestants.

Livestock Benefit Auction will be held May 9 at Big Spring High School 6 PM until midnight with a variety of items for auction/sale.

Ag Science Day Camp will be held June 24, 25 at $60 for ages 8-12

Exchange Week is June 13-20 with 9 teens from Colorado visiting.

Activity Day I & II will be July 9 and Aug. 1. Ages 8-12 can attend this ½ day camp.
