Both Ben Williamson from State College, PA who judged the hogs and Kyle Fleener from Biglerville who judged the steers and lambs agreed that the quality of animals shown at this year’s fair could compete in many fairs throughout the country and be very competitive. The weather was great this year and a record crowd was out each night to watch the 4-H livestock shows and view the various projects completed by our community clubs and outreach members.

The 4-H members did a great job with their animals and the buyers certainly supported their efforts. Even in this tough economy, the sale averaged well above the market prices for the day. 8 steers, 83 hogs, and 33 lambs were shown and sold at the annual event! Buyers came from all over the region to support the sale!

  • A set of siblings took home Champion honors in the steer and hog shows. Champion Steer was shown by Bryce Fitzgerald of West Grove and Reserve Champion Steer was shown by his brother Brody. Both were registered Angus steers. The Champion brought $2.50/lb and was purchased by Oxford Feed and Lumber of Oxford and Spring Hope Angus of Nottingham. The Reserve was purchased by Herr Foods of Nottinghan for $2.00/lb. The steer was then donated by Herr Foods to the House of His Creation in Lititz.
  • The Champion Market Hog shown by Emma Uhlman of Exton was purchased by Hess Mills of Paradise for $5.00/lb and the Reserve who was shown by her sister Hanna Uhlman was purchased by Dr. Ryan Fairbairn, DVM of Rock Valley, Iowa for $3.00/lb.
  • The Champion Lamb was shown by Andrew Howe of Downingtown and was purchased by the Chester/Delaware Farm Bureau for a record setting $16.00/lb. Don Hannum of West Caln Twp was on hand to submit the winning bid for the Farm Bureau, The reserve champion shown by David Bell of Nottingham was purchased by $5.50/lb by John Rock Inc. of Sadsburyville.

The steer sale averaged $2.11/lb, the hogs $2.22/lb and the lambs $4.99/lb.
