Auctions are a great way for food businesses to source fresh, local produce in wholesale quantities. Participating can seem daunting to a first-timer, but we will show you the way during Produce Auction Tour and Information Session for Buyers! We will take viewers on a tour of two Pennsylvania auctions; describe the nuts and bolts of buying at the auction; and hear from a real auctioneer. We will also dispel some myths about produce auctions along the way.
The produce auction is a staple of Pennsylvania’s produce marketplace and a win/win for farmers and buyers alike. Auctions give buyers a front-row seat to the beauty and abundance of locally-grown food and flowers throughout the season, from specialty items to staple seasonal crops like corn and tomatoes. The live-bidding format puts buyers in the driver’s seat, letting them see products (and judge quality) for themselves and determine the price and volume that suits their needs.Â
We will give attendees the tools and confidence to jump into the action and start bidding at their local produce auction.
This work is supported by a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
