PestWatch Report on July 26, 2017

European corn borer larvae.

Corn earworm (CEW)

After a brief lull, CEW counts are now rising, exceeding a 5-6 day spray interval in an arc from Pittsburg into central PA, with one site near Pittsburg at a 4-5 day interval. Spikes suggesting a 3-4 day interval popped up in Erie county to the northwest, and Lehigh county to the southeast.

European corn borer (ECB)

ECB are well into the 2nd generation. High counts are in Huntington county, and rising counts in Bucks, Centre, and York counties.

Fall armyworm (FAW)

Spikes are being reported from Erie and Fayette counties.

Sap beetles

Multiple locations are reporting sap beetle infestations, even in tight-husked cultivars and no obvious entry routes from worms.

Thresholds

Reproductive (tassel/silk) and late vegetative corn attracts moths. Shorten spray schedules when populations increase.

Thresholds Based on CEW Captures

very low14-355 to 6 day
low36-704 to 5 day

If CEW is low, then consider ECB
