About the Live Webinar
Invasive insects pose an ongoing threat to agriculture, forests, landscapes, and natural ecosystems across the United States. This introductory webinar will help participants understand what invasive insects are, how they differ from native and introduced species, and why early detection is essential to slowing their spread and minimizing impacts. The program will also examine how invasive species arrive and establish in new areas through pathways such as trade, travel, and the movement of plants and materials. Participants will learn practical steps to help prevent the spread of invasive species and the important role homeowners, gardeners, industry professionals, and community members play in early detection and reporting efforts.
Pennsylvania has identified more than 250 invasive plants, insects, pathogens, and animals that significantly impact the environment and agricultural production—causing hundreds of millions of dollars in economic losses each year. The Pennsylvania Invasive Species Webinar Series is dedicated to addressing this critical issue. Each session highlights timely topics related to invasive species in Pennsylvania and beyond, including species identification, management strategies, ecological impacts, and key concepts in invasion biology. Designed for a broad audience, the series welcomes gardeners, naturalists, land managers, educators, and anyone interested in learning more about invasive species—no prior knowledge required. By raising awareness and sharing practical information, the series aims to empower communities and highlight the ongoing efforts of state agencies and partners working to protect Pennsylvania’s landscapes and natural resources.
This webinar is being presented in partnership with the Pennsylvania Governor's Invasive Species Council.
