Groundwater professionals, natural resource managers, educators and anyone interested in the management and protection of water resources are invited to attend the 13th annual Pennsylvania Groundwater Symposium happening May 5 at the Best Western Conference Center in Harrisburg, preceded by an optional field trip to several aggregate mines, active and repurposed, in the lower Susquehanna River Watershed. Â Participants who attend the symposium are eligible for up to .75 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Those who also attend the tour are eligible for another .5 CEUs. Â
The Symposium is sponsored by Penn State Extension, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the PA Water Resources Research Center, and the Penn State College of Agriculture Sciences. Major partners include the USGS, PA-DCNR, the Pennsylvania Groundwater Association, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, and the Penn State Extension Master Well Owner Network (MWON).
This event is for people who work or volunteer in fields where an understanding of groundwater management, current research, and education is needed, including hydrogeologists, geologists, engineers, soil scientists, oil and gas professionals, water operators, sanitarians, well and septic contractors, educators, students, and Penn State Master Well Owner Network volunteers.Â
Participants will hear from a wide variety of groundwater scientists, regulators, industry professionals, and educators. Topics include an update on Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) water management programs by Executive Director Andrew Dehoff; a GIS-based method for estimating groundwater recharge rates in Pennsylvania using multicriteria decision analysis and USGS baseflow data by Pierre MaCoy, SRBC Hydrogeologist; breakout presentations focused on a variety of topics such as hydrogeological investigations, Carbon Capture, PFAS transport, the Pennsylvania Groundwater Information System, seasonal trends in groundwater quality, and more. The event will also provide an update on efforts to establish new statewide well-driller licensing requirements, Pennsylvania water law as it relates to data center development, and the fate of contaminants in stormwater management control structures by Shirley Clarke P.E., Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering at Penn State University.  Â
