MWON Volunteer Wins Penn State Extension Award

Chris Schlegel is presented with the PA ANREP Natural Resource Champion Award by Extension Educator, Peter Wulfhorst

The Pennsylvania chapter of the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals (PA ANREP) awarded its 2017 Natural Resource Education Champion Award to Chris Schlegel of Digman’s Ferry, PA. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual or group for their support of and enthusiasm for natural resources extension education at the county, state or regional level in Pennsylvania. The award was presented at the 2017 PA Joint Council of Extension Professionals (PA JCEP) meeting banquet in State College on November 8. PA ANREP Member Peter Wulfhorst presented the award to Schlegel.

Chris has been a volunteer with the Penn State Extension, Master Well Owner Network (MWON) since its inception in 2005. He was part of the first cohorts of MWON volunteers trained in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Over the past 12 years, Chris has stood out as an exemplary MWON volunteer. He has conducted countless educational programs and talked with hundreds of private water supply owners at Safe Drinking Water Clinics or displays at events. In the past four years alone, Chris has provided personal assistance to nearly 300 private water supply owners. He has also contributed presentations to several hundred participants at Safe Drinking Water Clinics and On-Lot Septic workshops sponsored by Penn State Extension in Pike, Carbon, and Monroe Counties. In preparation for these events, Chris created several innovative exhibits and presentation to help deliver effective education to program attendees including a model water well.

Chris has a lifetime of professional experience as a sewage enforcement officer and has held other important natural resources roles in his home township that have helped him deliver effective education to homeowners. He has also formed important partnerships with various Extension Educators and Specialists including Peter Wulfhorst and Bryan Swistock (Penn State Extension Educators). Congratulations Chris!
