Discover how easy it can be to transform your yard into a thriving, watershed-friendly habitat with our native plant kits. Each kit is designed to help you add ecologically valuable plants to your property—creating habitat for fireflies and other wildlife, reducing stormwater runoff compared to shallow-rooted plants, improving soil health, and supporting cleaner local waterways. These kits align with the principles of the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Watershed-Friendly Certification, developed in partnership with the Nurture Nature Center.

Each kit includes carefully selected plant plugs grown by Kind Earth Growers using locally collected, open-pollinated seeds and a 50 percent peat-free growing medium. Smaller than typical nursery plants, these plugs are easy to transport and install within existing vegetation. They are grown with healthy root systems to establish quickly in fall, ensuring strong growth in the seasons to come.

Plant plugs are less than one inch to several inches tall, with roots measuring 1–3 inches in plastic wells. Please see the resources for plug care and planting instructions.

Container Kits are a smaller option and include five species with one plant of each species, for a total of five plants.

All kits are grown to order. If a species does not germinate successfully, a comparable native species will be substituted to ensure high-quality plants.

Why Plant in the Fall?

Soil temperatures remain warmer than the air, allowing plants to focus on root development without the stress of summer heat or dry conditions. Research also suggests that planting at different times can improve resilience to weather extremes, pests, and other stressors due to varied stages of plant development.

Program Support

When you purchase a Watershed-Friendly Kit, you support your local Master Watershed Steward Program and help volunteers provide education, outreach, and restoration projects in communities across Pennsylvania. View additional Watershed-Friendly fundraising efforts.
