Llama and Alpaca Research Opportunities

Camelid Growth Curve Project

We are currently seeking data on cria growth for both llamas and alpacas to help develop ideal growth curves. Ideal growth curves have been calculated for many species and help provide insight into managing weight gain, feed intake, nutritional requirements, etc. Currently, there is very little information available on camelid growth curves, therefore, we are looking to expand upon the growth data that is already available and hopefully generate accurate and useful growth curves for both llamas and alapacas.

What we are looking for:

Birth weight and date, and then successive body weights and dates at any interval up to 30 months of age.

If you are interested in participating and have weight data on your growing crias, please contact Dr. Robert Van Saun at rjv10@psu.edu or at 814-865-6995.
