Invasive Plant: Ragged Robin

Ragged robin (Silene flos-cuculi), a member of the Caryophyllaceae family (formerly known as Lychnis flos-cuculi), is an herbaceous perennial plant native to parts of Europe and Asia. It was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s, likely through ornamental plantings, although accidental introduction via ship ballast has also been suggested.

Concerns
Ragged robin has spread in parts of Pennsylvania and other regions of the United States, particularly in moist habitats. Its capacity to self-seed allows it to form locally dense patches that may compete with native vegetation, thereby reducing biodiversity. Ragged robin is also extremely adaptable, as it commonly establishes in disturbed areas before invading pristine, native ecosystems. Additionally, its seeds may remain dormant in the soil for about 5 years, allowing the species to persist even after the removal of a parent plant.
While it may be tempting to plant this species due to its unique, untidy appearance, it is important to consider its harmful impacts on native ecosystems across the commonwealth. In fact, as of 2025, the Pennsylvania Governor's Invasive Species Council added ragged robin to their Pennsylvania Invasive Plant List, which designates it as a species of concern that causes harm to Pennsylvania's environment, economy, and/or human health.

Description
Size
Upright, flowering stems range from 8-31.5 inches tall, originating from a shallow, fibrous root system.

Leaves
Basal leaves are gray-green, narrow, stalked, and grass-like with a bristly-hairy texture. Mid- and upper-stem leaves are simple, opposite, and untoothed.

Flowers
Star-shaped with 10 stamens and 5 petals that are deeply cut into 4 narrow segments. Rose-pink (occasionally white) in color and 1 ½ inches wide. Bases are fused and tubular. Typical blooms occur in clusters from May through early July. A second bloom is possible in late summer.

Fruit
Dry fruit capsules (0.2-0.4 inch) that split open when ripe and release small seeds during fall.

Stems
Rigid and somewhat sticky to the touch with small, barbed, downward-facing hairs. Branched near the tips.

Habitat and Distribution
Ragged robin is tolerant of a variety of conditions, including part shade to full sun and moist (preferred) to dry soil. It can be found in human-disturbed areas (e.g., roadsides) as well as floodplains, meadows, fields, woodlands, and wetlands. It has naturalized across much of the northeastern U.S., Montana, and Washington. In Pennsylvania, ragged robin findings have been documented in over 1/3 of the state's counties.

Look-Alikes
Ragged robin possesses several distinct features, including its five deeply divided petals, that help differentiate it from other flowering species. However, some may mistake it for the native fire pink (Silene virginica), which has similar, notched, narrow petals divided into two lobes at the tips.

Ragged robin can also be confused with non-native species, such as the red campion (Silene dioica) and sticky catchfly (Viscaria vulgaris). While both are pink in color, their petals are much rounder and shallowly-divided than ragged robin. When searching for ragged robin, note its 5 unique petals, each with 4 deeply-cut segments.


Native Alternatives
There are a multitude of native, herbaceous perennial species that fit a similar environmental niche to ragged robin. The following are adapted to similar habitat conditions, support biodiversity, and attract pollinators:
- Fire pink (Silene virginica)
- Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnate)
- Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)
- Dense blazing star (Liatris spicata)
- Wild columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
- Swamp rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)
- New England aster (Symphotrichum novae-angliae)
- Blue vervain (Verbena hastata)
Management
Since ragged robin is a fibrous-rooted herb, successful control requires targeting its root system, particularly the crown—the perennial part of the plant that gives rise to each year's shoots and roots. In gardens, ragged robin can grow as single plants rather than in clonal patches, which may make control less complicated.
An Integrated Pest Management approach to control requires a clear plant community objective for each site and a threshold of how much ragged robin can be tolerated before removal is needed. The recommended techniques to reduce this weed include cultural, mechanical, and chemical methods.
Cultural techniques help promote desirable plants while limiting avenues to introduce more weeds. These techniques help keep an infestation from getting worse, but do not reduce it in the short term. For ragged robin, effective mechanical techniques require removing the crown from the soil via digging or pulling. In either approach, make sure to remove the soil from exhumed root clumps and place them somewhere they cannot contact more soil or rehydrate (e.g., in sealed trash bags for disposal).
Chemical control is useful to reduce labor and soil disturbance. Available literature on plants related to ragged robin suggests that glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide, is most effective (e.g., Roundup). Spot-treatment is required to limit injury to the desired species. The best time to target treatment is when ragged robin transitions from rosette stage to elongation of its flowering stems, which balances its low-to-the-ground growth form and greater leaf area for increased herbicide translocation. In other words, herbicides can penetrate roots and leaves for maximum effectiveness.
Most glyphosate product labels will have instructions to mix the herbicide at 0.75 to 2.0 percent by volume and treat the foliage so that it is visibly wet, but not running off. Sprayers should have a wand long enough to reach the plant and an adjustable nozzle that produces a narrow pattern for more precise targeting. Use the lowest possible pressure to limit the formation of fine droplets that can drift and injure adjacent non-target plants.
Management CalendarÂ
The dig/pull window for ragged robin occurs year-round. Herbicide spot treatment should coincide with the plant's flowering and seed-ripening periods. Active green foliage must also be present for effective herbicide application.Â
