How to Take a Soil Sample

[Educator] A healthy garden starts with healthy soil. Soil testing is the best way to understand what nutrients your soil needs. Your soil test kit will have specific instructions for you to follow. In this video, we'll show you a basic procedure for collecting a soil sample. Before you begin, gather your tools. You'll need a clean, plastic bucket and a soil probe or garden trowel. Avoid using metal buckets as they can contaminate your sample and affect test results. Next, take soil samples from eight to 10 random locations in your garden. Dig six to eight inches deep. This is where plant roots will grow and absorb nutrients. Be sure to collect soil from different areas to get a more accurate picture of overall fertility. Once you've collected all your samples, mix them together in your plastic bucket. This helps create a representative sample of your entire garden, rather than testing just one spot. Now, spread the soil evenly over a flat surface like a tarp or piece of cardboard to dry out. Remove stones and break up any large clumps of dirt. After the soil has dried out, place about one to two cups of your mixed soil into a soil sample bag or container. Follow the submission instructions from your chosen soil testing facility. Once you receive your results, you'll know exactly what your soil needs.
