About The In Person Workshop
Join Penn State Extension Master Gardeners for "How to Plant a Tree," an in-person workshop featuring both classroom instruction and a hands-on demonstration of proper tree planting techniques. Trees offer lasting benefits to our landscapes and communities—enhancing property values, adding beauty and structure, providing shade and cooling, and helping reduce noise, light, and air pollution. Because a tree is an investment in future generations, proper planting and care are essential. Many newly planted trees struggle due to poor or defective roots, incorrect planting depth, improper techniques, or inadequate aftercare. This program will equip participants with the knowledge needed to give trees a strong, healthy start.
The most important feature of any tree is often the one we cannot see—the roots. During this workshop, participants will learn how to evaluate root systems, what to look for when selecting trees at a garden center, and how to plant and care for trees using research-based best practices. The hands-on demonstration will include planting bareroot, container-grown, and balled-and-burlapped nursery stock. Many traditional planting instructions are outdated or incorrect; this session will provide guidance grounded in current research to ensure trees not only survive but also thrive. Preregistered participants will receive a free potted tree seedling to take home at the conclusion of the workshop.
Space is limited. Preregistration is required.
