Breakout Session 1
09:00 am Workshop - Vegetable Seed Starting Learn the essentials related to growing cool weather vegetables from seed in the summer. This workshop will address proper timing, soil conditions, germination rates and time, fertilization and water requirements, controlling pests and diseases, and other cultural needs to ensure good healthy crops.
09:00 am Workshop - Pruning: When & How Sharpen your pruning skills with Nemours Estate gardener, Ray Murphy. Ray will discuss pruning tools and types, and the best time to prune. Then we will go out in the field and find pruning opportunities to practice what we’ve learned.
09:00 am Lecture - Common Plant Problems Identification and management suggestions. Emelie Swackhamer has worked as a Penn State Extension Educator for 22 years and enjoys helping gardeners diagnose problems and learn about options to fix them. Her formal training is in Plant Pathology, but she is always ready to tackle insect topics too.
Breakout Session 2
10:30 am Lecture - Planting Your Rain Garden Rain gardens do double duty in our landscapes. As they function to clean and infiltrate storm water they can also become an oasis for wildlife with wonderful colors and the sights and sounds of butterflies and songbirds. Learn how to choose plants that ‘work’ in your rain garden.
10:30 am Workshop - Painted Leaf Impression Tote Bag Create a unique canvas bag hand painted with real leaf impressions. Supplies, technique and creative support are all included. Bring clothing protection, if desired.
10:30 am Workshop - Plant Propagation: A Hands-On Approach This course will be an applied practicum in plant propagation. Students will experience propagation of woody and herbaceous plans by cutting, by division, by seed and by tissue culture. Stock plants will be provided, as well as the ancillary materials required (rooting hormone, flats and potting media).

01:00 pm Workshop - Foam Trough Planter Make a lightweight, recycled planter from Styrofoam than looks like stone, then take home and plant. Learn this technique to create more for fairy gardens, herb gardens etc.

01:00 pm Lecture - Surefire Trees for the Home Landscape Consider the pest and disease problems that are affecting some of our surefire trees, we will look at potentially better choices for today’s home landscaper. We will consider how to select the best trees for both the small and larger properties to hopefully reduce long-term maintenance as well as provide the ornamental and environmental qualities we desire.
