Groundwater and Drinking Water Highlighted at Groundwater Symposium

The symposium was again held in recognition of National Drinking Water Week to highlight the importance of groundwater to both public and private drinking water supplies across Pennsylvania. The Symposium theme: Groundwater and Drinking Water: Making the Connection provided a forum for a capacity crowd of over 250 researchers, students, professionals and educators working in the groundwater field to exchange information and promote protection of groundwater resources throughout the state. Dr. Gale Blackmer, State Geologist and Bureau Director with the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey, provided opening remarks for the symposium followed by keynote speakers who addressed important groundwater issues related to groundwater contamination, public water supply wells, and source water protection. Ten concurrent presentations and two posters were also provided on emerging groundwater topics including drinking water from private wells, groundwater/aquifer studies, land use impacts on groundwater, and source water/wellhead protection.

The Symposium was co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Ground Water Association along with Penn State Extension, the Master Well Owner Network, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Water Resources Research Center.

Plans are already underway for the 2018 Pennsylvania Groundwater Symposium to be held on May 8, 2018 in State College, PA.
