A friendship forged through shared interests in forest stewardship and volunteering has stood the test of time and benefited forests, wildlife, and many people too.

Two Pennsylvania Forest Steward Volunteers have built a strong friendship through their mutual interests and calling to help others. Managing challenging issues (such as invasive plants, poor timber harvesting practices, insect outbreaks and excessive deer densities) in forests today can be a daunting task and shared firsthand advice from trained forestland owner peers can be a great help. Not managing these issues is no longer a wise option, as most forestlands need human assistance to restore wildlife habitat and forest health.

[MONROE CRESSLEY] Hi.

I'm Monroe Cressley.

I'm a forest steward.

I'm a property owner.

Uh, I enjoy my property most of all for recreation, hunting, and just getting out in the woods for nature.

[TONY BOYLE] Hi.

My name's Tony Boyle.

I'm also a forest steward volunteer, and I enjoy my forest land for recreation, but mostly the peacefulness of it.

[MONROE CRESSLEY] As a forest steward, the volunteer work that we do is we help the neighbors.

We help other landowners if we can.

We go to other land owners' property, check theirs out.

Uh, we have different organizations that come on my property that we do walks, teach them about invasives, how the trees grow.

[TONY BOYLE] In the past, we hosted 4H groups.

There was a beekeeping club here.

We were very involved with beekeeping.

That's how we met and become such good friends, through beekeeping.

So we really enjoy attending the state events and volunteering to meet all the new people.

Uh, not only to give them a friendly face with me and Monroe welcoming them and giving them welcome package, but kinda to let them know that they're there with friends.

One of the things we really enjoy doing together is advocating for forests, the forest landowners, and wildlife.

Some of the ways we do it is we go and celebrate all the accomplishments that we have been a part of.

With over 30 years combined experience with the Pennsylvania Forest Steward Program, Monroe and myself have seen a lot of problems that other forest landowners have and solutions and education that not only we can help with, but all of the volunteers throughout Pennsylvania.

[MONROE CRESSLEY] I enjoy my property here.

It's my dream.

I own it now for about 35 years, and I just love it here.

It's something I always wanted.

And I don't care if you have one acre or a thousand acres.

It's just as well as you really enjoy it.
