About the In-Person Workshop
Penn State Extension 4-H staff are invited to participate in this free Stream Health Educator Workshop. Participants will learn more about stream health indicators, how to assess stream health, and how to lead students through stream health assessments. Pennsylvania has the second-highest number of stream miles of any state in the United States. Streams and rivers are so common that you may not even notice the subtle or dramatic differences between one waterway and another in your community. You may have a stream near where you live or a favorite stream where you fish or recreate, but are those streams healthy? Humans have impacted streams by altering the landscape, which in turn has changed how water cycles in our communities. These changes can affect water flow and introduce pollution into streams. By taking a closer look at the physical, biological, and chemical characteristics of waterways, we can learn a great deal about the factors that indicate stream health. This private workshop for Penn State Extension 4-H staff will explore how watershed landscapes can impact stream health and highlight several common stream health indicators. Participants will learn how to use the First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH) protocol to assess stream conditions so they can lead students through local stream assessments. Copies of the First Investigation of Stream Health Educator Guidebook, aligned with PA STEELS Standards, and an educator kit with materials needed to lead a group of students through a visual and biological stream assessment activity will be provided and shared regionally among participants.
This workshop combines indoor and outdoor learning and will take place rain or shine. Participants should be prepared to spend approximately two hours outside, walking to the stream site over uneven terrain and accessing the stream bank and edge. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and water bottle, dress for outdoor activities, and wear rain boots or shoes that can get wet.
