EPA registered repellents are easy to purchase and are low risk. In this video, we will discuss how to use repellents including how to find a repellent that works for you, how to determine if this repellent has been tested for effectiveness against vectors, and how to apply repellents to help you reduce your risk of vector bites and vector-borne diseases.

(upbeat music)

- Using repellents is an important preparation step to reduce tick and mosquito bites.

And these tips can help you use them effectively.

The first step is picking out the repellent that works best for you and looking for an environmental protection agency or EPA registration number.

To find a repellent that meets your requirements, visit the EPA Repellent Finder tool on the EPA's website.

Then enter in filters like active ingredients, company names, how much time you need to be protected, and whether you need protection from mosquitoes or ticks, or both.

When a product has an EPA registration number, it tells you that this product has been rigorously tested for safety and that it works against the pests it is labeled for.

You can find the EPA registration number on the product label.

For example, this is a product that includes oil of lemon eucalyptus as the active ingredient.

Oil of lemon eucalyptus is a recommended active ingredient for tick and mosquito repellents.

You can see the EPA registration number on the label here.

Pure lemon eucalyptus oil does not have an EPA registration number.

As a result, it is not recommended as a repellent.

Products that are not registered by the EPA cannot state that they are effective for reducing vector-borne diseases like Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

So, after you have selected a repellent, what is the best way to apply it?

The most important thing to remember is to apply repellents according to the label directions and understand that effectiveness may change based on your physical activity and perspiration, water exposure like swimming or rain, and temperature.

When you are applying repellents, make sure to avoid sensitive areas like your mouth and eyes, and to apply in a well ventilated area.

Never use repellents on pets or other animals unless the label states it is safe.

Keep in mind that some products should not be used on children under the age of three.

And this will be stated on the label.

Always store repellents out of reach of children.

If you have any questions or concerns about repellent use, consult your physician or the National Pesticide Information Center.

Using repellents are an important vector bite reduction step.

But remember to read all label application and disposal instructions for safety.
