Enhancing Biochar Sorption for Lead-Contaminated Soils

Length: 00:08:29

This video highlights the procedure for biochar surface modification to enhance Pb adsorption and discusses biochar interactions with Pb in contaminated soils.

Biochar is an ancient material with a lot of modern potential — from improving soil health to helping reduce lead exposure in urban gardens. In this video, we walk through lab demonstrations, hear from industry partners, and break down the science behind how biochar can make soils safer for growing food, especially in places affected by legacy lead contamination. Graduate researcher Cara Bintrim introduces the basics of biochar and shares what personally inspired her to work on soil contamination issues. We also head over to Metzler Forest Products, where biochar is produced on an industrial scale using a pyrolysis system that captures the heat from production and replaces thousands of gallons of propane each year. Back at Penn State’s Soil Research Cluster Lab, we follow researchers as they test a simple heat-treatment method that enhances biochar’s adsorption capabilities towards lead. The project was carried out using the lab’s full suite of analytical tools—from combustion analyzers to spectrometers and field instruments. We hope this video sparks new conversations, new experiments, and new collaborations in the fast-growing world of biochar research.
