Preparing food in large quantities is different from food preparation at home. Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer's Guide to Safe Food Handling curriculum helps organizations that want to assist nonprofits and their volunteers understand the risks associated with preparing large amounts of food and the essential food safety practices needed to ensure a safe event.Â
Even if organizations have been doing this for years, things change, and it is crucial that volunteers stay current and knowledgeable about the rules and regulations governing food safety. Don't risk your customers' health or your organization's reputation.Â
Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer's Guide to Safe Food Handling curriculum was developed in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Penn State Extension educators and other faculty who helped develop this curriculum are certified by the National Restaurant Association. All have received training on the most current research on food safety.
This curriculum can be delivered in person or online. The educational slide deck features over 200 slides with instructor notes to support classroom or online instruction.
The curriculum is designed for institutions that want to train non-profit and volunteer groups in preparing food for events such as church fundraisers, fire department barbecues, booster club food sales, and many other occasions where food is served to the public. Â
Volunteers will learn the causes of foodborne illness as well as safe food handling practices related to:Â
- Preventing Cross ContaminationÂ
- Controlling Time and TemperatureÂ
- Good Personal HygieneÂ
- Cleaning and SanitizingÂ
- Planning a Successful Food EventÂ
