Composting is an accepted method of disposal for animal carcasses and waste in Pennsylvania. When done correctly, it results in rapid decomposition of organic matter and inactivation of harmful pathogens. Composting is an efficient means of recycling animal tissue and waste into a useful product.
Animal producers and meat processors are encouraged to contact Penn State Extension for on-farm assistance with composting efforts.
What to Expect from a Site Visit
Once a site visit is scheduled, one or more educators with composting subject matter expertise will travel to your premises and meet directly with you to discuss your composting goals, assess any existing piles or windrows, and provide recommendations for improvement. One or more follow-up visits may be necessary to evaluate improvements and address any new concerns.
Producers and processors will gain hands-on experience during these visits and have active roles in the success of their compost piles.
You will learn:
- Material selection
- Compost construction
- How to monitor microbial activity
- How to identify and troubleshoot problems
Every premise is unique and faces different challenges. Whether indoors or outdoors, large windrow or small bin, our team can assist with the composting method that best fits your needs. Our team also covers all species, including poultry, dairy, and livestock.
