Leadership
A leader focuses on creating change through bold visions, developing strong interpersonal relationships, building capacity, and inspiring others. Penn State Extension has the resources you need to build your leadership skills and become a successful leader.
Leadership Development Resources
Successful leadership requires a particular mindset and skill set. Optimism and realism are essential, especially during difficult times. It’s vital for a leader to accept realities, but also to never lose faith when challenges arise.
A strong leader can help create a powerful team because they can alleviate stress and cultivate a productive mindset, even when a team is inter-generational and multi-cultural. To do this, they must have a leadership philosophy or a set of beliefs, values, and principles. Emotional intelligence can be effective in terms of reaching organizational goals and outcomes.
A leader is different from a manager because they are more interested in producing change and movement than order and consistency. Leadership development opportunities are a fundamental need for professionals who feel they lack leadership skills. The mechanics of leadership are something that can be easily taught.
Team Development and Communication
Team development is critical for all members of a team. Formal and informal leaders may serve as coaches to help team members. At the same time, team members could serve as mentors to a less-seasoned member of the team.
For a team to work effectively, team members must communicate with one another in ways that promote connectivity, a successful mindset, and an ability to understand one another. Effective team communication creates awareness and understanding that fosters adeptness as team members complete their tasks.
However, it would be unrealistic to expect every conversation and communication to be successful. Team members can be from various cultures and generations, which means there will be different experiences, values, and concerns. Such differences can make some conversations difficult.
As a leader, you may have to deal with conflict. To be able to do this, it’s essential to understand how and why conflict arises. Only then can you choose a conflict-handling style and adopt a conflict management strategy.
Organizational Strategies
Organizational strategies are what allows a business or organization to reach its established goals. Strategies are important because a well-defined plan is crucial if you want to succeed.
With strategies in place, everyone in an organization knows where the business needs to go and what needs to be done to get there.
There are many situations in which organizational strategies are key. During an organizational crisis, for example, it is important for employees to feel safe.
Whenteams work virtually, they have to be effective and motivated. A clear strategy will help by providing team members with precise tasks, assisting leaders to be more responsive, allowing for delegation, building trust, and encouraging creativity.
