Funded ACAP projects include a diverse set of best management practices (BMPs) which could include engineered structures to move water differently on the farm, agronomic methods that reduce soil disturbance and runoff, or planning activities to better manage nutrients on the farm.

County conservation districts receive applications from farmers to fund one or more BMPs that are included in the farm's plans for nutrient and sediment management. Selected applications will result in a contract between the district and the farmer. Contracts for ACAP projects range in value depending on what best management practices are being implemented: for example, small cover crops or large heavy use area protections with waste storage facilities.
