About the Live Webinar

Is your backyard stream slowly eroding—and taking your land with it? Discover practical, affordable solutions in Penn State Extension's upcoming Master Watershed Steward webinar, "Branches to Banks: A Budget-Friendly Stream Fix." This program introduces live staking, a simple streambank repair technique that uses branch cuttings from select native trees and shrubs to stabilize eroding banks naturally. When installed correctly, these "live stakes" take root and grow into mature plants that provide long-term erosion control while improving stream health. Participants will learn how live staking works, why it is an effective low-cost option for landowners, which native species perform best in Pennsylvania, and how to confidently harvest, prepare, and install stakes using basic tools and supplies. As an added benefit, mature plantings can supply future cuttings, creating a sustainable, self-renewing approach to protecting both your property and local waterways.

Optional: Purchase Live Stake Bundles

For an additional fee, participants may purchase a bundle of 10 locally harvested live stakes for pickup in one of seven counties for installation on their property. Bundles will be available March 24–27; see the Pickup Locations tab for specific sites and pickup hours. Quantities are limited. Because installation is time-sensitive, stakes should be planted within a few days of pickup for best results. No refunds will be issued for bundles not collected during the designated pickup period.
