This calculator tool is designed to give users estimates of the costs and returns from producing biochar. Download the file and open it in your computer using a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc.
- First time users can use the "Control Panel" sheet to vary the key inputs, such as system size and feedstock type, and see how it affects performance.
- The "Results" tab displays more details of the production and economic performance of the biochar system.Â
- Advanced users can adjust values in other tabs of the spreadsheet, and review additional details of the calculations that are used to simulate a biochar production system.
The calculator tool was created as part of the USDA-funded MASBio project, created by Francis Akyirem and reviewed by Daniel Ciolkosz, Jordan Brown, and the MASBio extension team. To learn more about the details of this model and biochar economics, please visit the article "Biochar - What Does it Cost to Produce?". Â
This tool is intended for people who are considering producing biochar as a business, or who would like to learn more about the potential for biochar production. Â
Users of this tool will learn how varying the size, feedstock, and other parameters of a biochar production facility can dramatically impact the costs and the financial viability of the facility. They will also be able to obtain rough estimates of the expected performance of a given configuration of a biochar production facility. Â
