The Beekeeping in Ukraine Journey will take you through Prewar times, visiting six regions in Ukraine through the Postwar experience and evolution of beekeeping practices in Ukraine after February 2022.

About the Speaker

Dr. Petrusia Kotlar, DC, is an alternative health care physician, part-time farmer, beekeeper, and practitioner/researcher, and Vice President of the American Apitherapy Society. Apitherapy is defined as the medicinal use of all products made by honeybees, including honey, propolis, pollen, royal jelly, and bee venom. Since 2012, Dr. Kotlar has been collaborating with Ukrainian researchers, scientists, and beekeepers from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences in Kyiv, Ukraine, and other regions, connecting and networking with PSU/CAS researchers and exploring new partnerships and exchanges. Her engagement with Ukrainian Beekeeping has been supported by the Woskob New Century Fund, associated with the International Programs of the College of Agricultural Sciences at PSU.

What will you learn?
  • You will follow the steps of researchers from PSU and UMN, beginning in Kyiv and will visit the Beekeeping Museums, a honey bee sanctuary, unique overwintering device, tours of observation hives, foundationless and primitive styles of beekeeping, and Apitherapy.
  • The journey proceeds to Postwar Ukraine 2022, where we get acquainted with Assoc. Professor Leonora Adamchuk of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences in Kyiv and learn of the activities and development of the Foundation of Women Beekeepers NGO, pollination and bee trials of bee training with drones, unique products of the hive, innovations in harvesting bee bread, and overall effects of the war in Ukraine on Beekeeping practices in Ukraine.
