Penn State University College of Agricultural Sciences and Penn State Extension Farm Safety are excited to unveil our 2nd Annual Agricultural Safety Expo! Free to participants, the event will feature agricultural safety demonstrations and other displays, with opportunity for hands-on participation.

Registration Details

Free to participants! Preregistration is recommended. Youth (under 18) must be registered along with and accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or designated chaperon on the day of the event.

Demonstrations & Displays

  • Pesticide Education
    Representatives from Penn State Pesticide Education Program will be on hand to provide a display about Personal Protective Equipment and Pesticide Spill Cleanup.

  • Corn Harvest Hazard Simulator
    This simulation will demonstrate corn-picker hazards and the prevention of machinery entanglement. Participants are given the opportunity to experience the speed at which a person can be pulled into a machine.

  • Fire Extinguisher Simulator
    Participants can learn some basics of Fire Extinguishers and fight a digital fire using a laser-driven infrared portable extinguisher.

  • Head, Eye, and Foot Protection
    Many injuries are preventable. This demonstration will illustrate the value and correct use of personal protective equipment to reduce injuries on the farm.

  • Farm Hazard Hunt Display
    This simulation will present proper detection and assessment of farm hazards. Participants will learn farm hazard prevention and hazard control strategies.

  • AgrAbility
    Program designed to assist farmers and other agricultural workers with disabilities or long-term health conditions by providing the resources and support they need to live independently and continue in production of agriculture.

09:00 am Welcome Address

09:10 am ATV Rollover / Tilt Table Demonstration This demonstration will feature a full-size ATV simulation for safe operation. Participants will discuss and demonstrate ATV safety practices to prevent injuries. (Approx. 30 min.)

09:45 am Tractor Safety Strategies A tractor scene will be on display. Participants will be engaged in a tractor safety strategy exercise to prevent rollover incidents. (Approx. 15-30 min.)

10:15 am Large Animal Rescue Simulation and Display Emergencies involving horses or livestock can be challenging, even for the most experienced provider or animal handler. This presentation will include the use of a horse mannequin equipped with a rescue harness and feature a rescue simulation with the Centre County Animal Rescue Team. (Approx. 1 hr.)

11:15 am Flowing Grain Hazard Display This simulation will illustrate how grain flows in storage structures and the hazards of flowing grain. Participants will learn safety procedures and an overview of emergency response techniques. (Approx. 15-30 min.)

11:45 am Chainsaw Safety and Penn State Woodsman Team Demonstration Penn State Senior Research Technologist Mike Powell Powell will be on hand to provide information about chainsaw safety and training; Mike will also conduct a chainsaw safety presentation followed by a demonstration from the Penn State Woodsman Team. (Approx. 1 hr.)
