Ag Safety Demos Loan Program

Penn State's Ag Safety and Health program in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering has developed demonstrations and simulators to engage youth and adults in learning the fundamentals of safety practices on farm operations.

These demonstrations and Simulators can be borrowed by organizations for your ag safety and health events. Demonstrations can be picked up from the Ag Safety and Health at Penn State University Park. If you are unable to pick up and drop off the demonstrations, we can discuss potential solutions. There is no cost to use the tabletop demonstrations and simulators, but there may be a small fee to cover the delivery of trailer demonstrations and large teaching tools.

If you are interested in borrowing any of the demonstrations or would like additional information, don't hesitate to get in touch with the program at agsafety@psu.edu or call 814-865-4582

Tabletop Demonstrations

The tabletop demonstrations are easy to transport, set up, and use. Each demonstration comes with an instruction manual explaining the step-by-step process for using it. These demonstrations are frequently used by Extension Educators, secondary ag teachers, and farm organizations for use at safety days or outreach events.

Hazards Identification

Dairy Dozen Farm Hazard Hunt

Demo that highlights hazards on the dairy farm

The Dairy Dozen Farm Hazard Hunt board focuses on the OSHA hazards outlined on dairy farms.

Farm Hazard Hunt Display

Demo that highlights farm hazards

The Farm Hazard Hunt Display is a 3'x3' demonstration board showing over 50 sources of farm hazards to engage the audience in discussing prevention, strategies to deal with potential hazards, and responding to injuries and fatalities.

Animal Safety

Animal Safety

Demo that highlights safety around large animals like horses and cows

The Animal Safety demonstration and lesson plan is geared toward young children (ages 4 – 8) to teach them about flight zones, animal behavior, and steps to keep themselves safe around cows and horses.

Equipment and Machinery

ATV and UTV Stability

Demo that highlights stability hazards with ATVs and UTVs

The ATV and UTV Stability demonstration allows participants to see and understand why ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) rollovers occur. Participants learn about stability, the center of gravity, how it changes when hauling, and the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Mini Tilt Table – Tractor Stability

Demo that highlights stability (center of gravity) hazard of tractors, skid steers, and other farm equipment

The Mini Tilt Table – Tractor Stability is used to teach about the center of gravity and stability baseline of a tractor, skid steer, and ATV.

Corn Harvest Hazard Simulator

Demo that highlights corn harvest hazards

The Corn Harvest Hazard Simulator simulates a clogged corn picker or forage harvester and provides a reaction time for the potential incident.

Mr. Egg and Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS)

Demo that highlights tractor rollover protection (ROPS)

The Mr. Egg and Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) is used to teach the basics about the center of gravity, stability baseline, value of ROPS, and ways to prevent tractor rollover incidents.

Power-Take-Off (PTO) Reaction Timer

Demo that simulates reaction time of power takeoff (PTO) entanglement

The Power-take-off (PTO) Reaction Timer tabletop demonstration was designed to provide a hands-on, lifelike PTO entanglement scenario. The participants' reaction time is measured in relationship to the speed of a turning PTO shaft.

Grain Safety

Grain Pull

Demo that simulates pulling someone out of a grain bin

The Grain Pull demonstration simulates pulling someone out of a grain bin, showing a pull strength on the screen. Discussion and teaching points highlight the force needed to pull a person, the impact on the victim, and how grain bin rescues are correctly done.

Hazards of Grain Bucket

Demo that highlights grain flow (in a storage structure)

The Hazards of Grain Bucket demonstration illustrates how grain flows in storage structures, the hazards of flowing grain, and rescue procedures for freeing a victim entrapped in flowing grain.

Tabletop Flowing Grain Hazards

Demo that simulates grain flow

The Tabletop Flowing Grain Hazards – Shows how grain flows and entrapment occur. This demonstration provides an opportunity to discuss entrapment prevention and how a grain rescue tube is used in an emergency response.

Personal Protective Equipment

Head, Eye, and Foot Safety

Demo that shows head, eye and foot protection (PPE)

The Head, Eye, and Foot Safety demonstration illustrates the value of choosing the proper personal protective equipment (PPE), understanding how equipment is tested, and knowing if the PPE you want to purchase meets the recommended standards.

Trailer Demonstrations and Large Teaching Tools

Our trailer demonstrations and large teaching tools are highly technical, require training, and have special transportation needs (e.g., do not fit in a pick-up truck, etc.). Access and availability are on a case-by-case basis. If you are interested in borrowing any of the demonstrations or would like additional information, please contact the program at agsafety@psu.edu or 814-865-4582.

Large Animal Rescue Training Horse Mannequins

Large animal rescue safety uses life-sized horse mannequins that can be borrowed.

The Large Animal Rescue Training Horse Mannequins are two full-sized horse mannequins that can be borrowed by certain organizations to be used in animal rescue training.

Tractors and Machinery

Tractor Stability Simulator

Tractor stability demonstration on a full sized trailer.

The Tractor Stability Simulator is a full-size trailer that has a mounted tractor cab. People sit in the cab and experience what it is like to operate a tractor on a slope and the danger zone.

Grain Bin Safety

Grain bin/grain flow demonstration on a full size trailer

The Grain Bin Safety demonstration illustrates how grain flows in storage structures and transport vehicles and the hazards of flowing grain. It is also used to teach rescue procedures to free a victim entrapped in flowing grain.
