Safety technologies that were once found only on large operations are now affordable for small and mid-sized farms. These technology upgrades can pay for themselves by increasing safety, reducing the risk of an injury, and saving time.

Back-up Cameras

Back-up cameras on tractors and skid steers not only increase safety around equipment but can also reduce joint strain and decrease the risk of slips, trips, and falls when getting on and off of equipment numerous times per day.  A backup camera ranges from $50 to $250 and provides increased visibility of children, reduces joint strain, and saves time.  Most camera systems are powered by a DC 12-volt power connection. Place the monitor in an area so that it does not block your view or interfere with operating the machinery.

Hitching Systems

A quick-attach hitching system allows you to hitch and unhitch wagons without leaving the tractor seat. There are various types of hitching systems available, from those used with wagons to ones that can assist with a 3-point hitch. This is a little more of an investment at $750 - $1,800, but it offers a strong return on investment due to reduced joint wear and tear, decreased risk of falls, and increased productivity. You should work directly with the hitch manufacturer to discuss the equipment you have, ensure you are getting the necessary components, and understand the installation process. 

Video Surveillance

Video surveillance systems can be used to reduce risk, improve monitoring, and support emergency response. Examples of uses include reducing the need for workers to enter dangerous places (e.g., confined spaces), observing livestock behavior and health (e.g., injured animals, calving), and supporting emergency response efforts during a fire or severe weather. Depending on the internet availability, number of cameras, and power sources, systems can vary in cost, ranging from $30 to $200. There are several factors regarding placement of the system, such as maintaining a good line of sight between camera and receiver, avoiding metal structures that can block wireless signals, keeping cameras away from certain motors which can cause interference, mounting cameras high enough to avoid environmental conditions (e.g., dust, mud, etc.), and shielding cameras from direct sunlight and severe weather.

Tracking and Communication Devices for Remote Work

Farm workers often work in large areas where cellular coverage may be limited, making tracking and communication devices valuable tools for both safety and equipment management. AirTags and other Bluetooth trackers can help locate and protect tools, equipment, and other assets, while GPS-based tracking devices can support worker safety, location monitoring, and emergency response, particularly for employees working alone or in remote locations. Depending on the work environment and available coverage, communication options may include cell phones, two-way radios (approximately $150), cellular-based push-to-talk devices ($150–$250), or satellite communication devices such as the Garmin inReach (approximately $200), which provide messaging and GPS location sharing when cellular service is unavailable. Many tracking devices, such as AirTags, are relatively affordable, with Bluetooth and GPS trackers often starting at around $20.

Smartphone Safety Apps and Portable or Wearable Devices

There are several smartphone apps that can be useful for agricultural workers, and many are free or relatively inexpensive. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) offers useful apps, including Safety Tool, Ladder Safety, and a Sound Level Meter. Emergency weather alert radios (priced at $25-$50) with various power sources (e.g., electric or battery-powered) provide severe weather warnings. In areas with limited cell coverage, battery-powered portable devices can provide workers with early warnings.

Wearable devices, such as smartwatches (priced at $20-$500), can include fall detection, heart rate and other vital-sign monitoring, emergency alerts, weather alerts, and location sharing. Medical alert systems, such as fall-detection devices or panic buttons, are priced between $30 and $90. Wearable air quality sensors (priced at $70-$150) can measure particulate matter to determine whether respiratory protection is needed. These devices are beneficial for all workers, but especially important for older farmers and those workers with health concerns.
